Description:
From a Legendary according to Dominican Use made for the Dominican nuns of Holy Cross in Regensburg c 1267-76 containing calendar, legends, sermons, and homilies for lessons at matins on the feasts of saints from the vigil of Andrew (Nov 29) to Katherine (Nov 25). Perhaps made at the expense of Gebehard von Hierzpech and his wife (married 1258). Among many fine miniatures is this historiated initial B(ernardus) at the opening of the section on Bernard, in which he is shown standing and with a book in his left hand and a crozier in his right. A small figure of a kneeling nun identified as 'Matildis' is in the margin. On another folio (63r) St Benedict is depicted in an almost identical way except for the colour of the cowl.
