Description:
An almost identical panel to one in the cloister at Wettingen by the same artist, Hans Funk, made in 1518 as indicated at the bottom, some four years earlier than the Wettingen panel (see GL85). Bernard is shown with the crozier in his left hand and a book in his right and St Urban, wearing a cope and the papal tiara, has the papal staff in his right hand as opposed to the grapes in the Wettingen glass and a book in his left hand upon which a bunch of grapes is placed. Below them are the heraldic devices of Clairvaux and the Cistercian abbey of St Urban. The head of Bernard is the original one in this panel.
