Description:
Bernard? Founded in 1185, the church of the Cistercian abbey of Kappel was rebuilt in the middle of the thirteenth century and extensive stained glass installed c 1320. One of these features a nimbed monk in a dark purple cowl - the colour usually used in medieval glass to denote black - and carrying a crozier in his right hand and a book in his left. The panel is flanked by two bishop saints, one of whom may possibly be his friend, the Irish St Malachy. Bernard is often depicted in a black cowl, but the window may equally well represent St Benedict.
