Description:
1525. The scene of Bernard, nimbed and shown as a young novice on the right, being reprimanded by his abbot Stephen Harding shown in a frontal position of authority in the centre although, significantly, not shown nimbed like his errant novice. Like the six other novices depicted Bernard is shown wearing the mantle worn by novices as opposed to the cowl, the habit worn by professed monks and shown here worn by the abbot. Compare this with the same scene from Altenberg, very differently treated (see GL08).
