Description:
1525. The scene of Bernard taking leave of his family which formed a common part of the cycle of saints' Lives. The red central figure of a young Bernard in lay clothes dominates the scene in which he is surrounded by his parents, brothers and sister. The youngest brother, Nivard, is shown as the child sitting on the ground in the lower righthand corner. In the background is a landscape with the city of Dijon and the abbey of Citeaux on the horizon.
