Description:
1525. Bernard's vision of the Nativity. The scene is his parents' house. On the left Bernard's mother, Aleth, sits with a rosary in her hands. The young Bernard in lay clothes is asleep sitting next to her. Facing them is an altar and in the background there are two men in a doorway. Above Bernard's head is a medallion containing a coat of arms but which would formerly have contained a Nativity scene, the subject of Bernard's vision, in the same way as the corresponding scene from the Altenberg cloister (see GL03). Bernard's halo is not the conventional round disc but a more restrained band of yellow surrounding his head.
