Description:
1505/32. One of two Altenberg scenes only found in the 'Golden Legend' (see also GL39). It depicts the boastfulness of a peasant Bernard met on a journey as regards his ability to pray. Bernard put him to the test promising his horse if he could recite the Lord's prayer without his mind wandering. He accepted the challenge confident that he could, but not even half way through his concentration lapsed when he started wondering whether he would get the saddle as well. After this he was less inclined to feel superior. The composition is very similar to one of the wall painting scenes at Owen in Wuerttemberg (WA43).
