Description:
1505/32. The second Altenberg panel with the scene of Bernard's death 20 August 1153 (see also GL48). Here Bernard is still alive and raises his hands to greet the bishop of Langres standing at the foot of his bed wearing a mitre and carrying a crozier. Bernard's scroll says: 'Ne Miseris, jam enim non sum de hoc mundo' (Do not mourn, for now I am not of this world). Two monks kneel by Bernard's bed and a larger group stand in the background, saying: 'Cur nos Pater deseris, aut cui nos desolatos relinguis' (When the father leaves us, to whom will he entrust our care?).
