Description:
1505/32. The scene of 20 August 1153 of Bernard on his deathbed with eyes closed and his hands folded inside the sleeves of his cowl, surrounded by three monks, one with an open prayer book and one carrying Bernard's crozier, and a kneeling bishop wearing a mitre. Through a window in the background a young man is kneeling in prayer, perhaps a glimpse back to the young Bernard? This is one of two panels in Altenberg depicting the scene of Bernard's death (see also GL49).
