1505/32. Depicts the dramatic confrontation of Bernard on the left with Abelard on the right at the Council of Sens presided over by the pope sitting in the centre flanked by a cardinal on each side, Haimeric and Gregory. Bernard's scroll contains his accusation: 'Ubi de Sancta Trinate loquitur: Arium, ubi de Parsona Christi: Nestorium, ubi de Gratia: Pelagium sapit' (When he speaks of the Trinity he is like Arius, when of the person of Christ, Nestorius, and when on the subject of Grace, Pelagius). The pope delivers the sentence: 'Universa Petri (Abaelardi) perversa dogmata Sanctorum Canonum auctoritate cum suo authore damnamus, eique tamquam haeretico perpetuum silentium imponismus. Libros erroris eorum (Abaelardi et Arnaldi de Brescia) ubicumque reperti fuerint, igne comburi' (According to the holy canons we pronounce sentence on the heresy of Peter and his author and bid that as a heretic he remain forever silent. Wherever the books (of Abelard and Arnold of Brescia) are found, they are to be burnt). A fire at the feet of the pope has already been prepared.
