1505/32. Scene of Bernard's participation in the Council of Etampes in 1130. In the centre Bernard sits as judge in a frontal position in a vaulted chamber. The location is indicated by the inscription 'Stampe' (Etampes) on the wall. He is dressed in a white cowl with the white tunic and black scapular showing underneath and wearing a black cap. His crozier is in his right hand, and his left hand is placed on a book resting on his knees. On his left is King Louis of France wearing a crown and holding a scepter and accompanied by his retinue, one of them carrying a banner decorated with fleurs de lys. On his right are the archbishop of Reims, a Cistercian abbot and a figure in a black habit, perhaps Abbot Suger of St Denis (1112-51). The scroll below Bernard's feet reads: 'Negotium Dei Dei Famulo imponamus! Te Deum laudamus' (God's business we entrust to God's servant! Praise be to God). Bernard's scroll reads: 'Innocentius tanquam Verus Papa ab omnibus est suscipiendus' (Innocent must be supported by all as the true Pope).
