Description:
Woodcut illustrating the beginning of the chapter on St Bernard recording his birth at Fontaine of noble parents in the Golden Legend in Italian printed in Venice 10/12/1492 by Manfred de Bonellis. Unusually Bernard is depicted wearing eucharistic vestments at the Elevation at Mass. He is not nimbed and does not have any of the other usual attributes. He is assisted by three acolytes, one of them carrying a large candle and one ringing a hanging bell. There are two unidentified figures on the right of the picture.
