Copper Engraving by I A M Zwoll (active 1475-90) dated c 1480. Bernard kneels in a church on a tiled floor. He has an elaborate crozier with sudarium attached under his right arm, has his hands clasped in prayer, and looks up at the Virgin and Child sitting on a high-backed chair surmounted by three angels and raised high above the floor in a way that, with the two candles with which she is flanked, almost suggests an altar. She squeezes her breast and three jets of milk are sent in the direction of Bernard. The inscription emanating from Bernard's mouth reads 'Monstra te esse matrem', with the Virgin's response 'ecce Bernarde'. An open book lies on the floor, and a small dog appears in the bottom right corner.
