Description:
Woodcut used as a frontispiece to 'Fundamentum in Grammatica' printed 28/6/1493 in Copenhagen by the Dutchman Gotfred van Ghemen who was active in Gouida before coming to Copenhagen 1493-5 and again 1505-10, having been in Leiden between the two periods. An example of a Lactation scene used to illustrate a book with text totally different from the subject of the image. A standing and crowned Virgin with Child bares her breast and sends a jet of milk in the direction of a nimbed Bernard kneeling before her with hands clasped in prayer and with his crozier leaning against his left shoulder. The scene is a garden with a low brick wall behind.
