Description:
Woodcut in a book of the Lives of Saints printed in Augsburg by Anton Sorg 1/8/ 1486. Bernard, with hands clasped in prayer and with a crozier under his right arm at the end of which are the arms of Clairvaux, kneels before a half-figure of the crowned Virgin and Child in the sky. Behind Bernard is a church. Virtually the same design had been used in another book printed in Augsburg in 1482 by Johann Schoensperger (see EN58), and another minor variation was used in a second edition by Sorg in 1488 (see EN62).
