Description:
One of 63 woodcut designs of saints (there are 65 illustrations, but two of the designs are repeated) attributed to Albrecht Duerer and printed in Nuremberg in 1503 in the 'Salus Animae' by Hieronymus Hoelzel. Although the basic design may be Duerer's, members of his workshop, in keeping with tradition, are bound to have collaborated in such an extensive work. A lifeless Christ with arms hanging down is being supported by the kneeling Bernard at whose feet are the arms of Clairvaux surmounted by a mitre. An almost identical design by Hans Baldung appeared in a 'Hortulus Animae' printed in Strasbourg in 1512 (see EN23). Bernard has 'tuft'.
