Description:
One of 171 woodcuts by Hans Schaefelein in a German translation of the 'Golden Legend' printed in two volumes by Johann Otmar in Augsburg in 1513. The image of the Virgin and Child in the heavens surrounded by rays and appearing to a kneeling Bernard is on p 186 of the second volume at the opening of the section dealing with Bernard under his feast day, 20 August. The arms of Clairvaux are at Bernard's feet. The scene is out of doors, with trees and a church in the background. It is very similar to many Lactation scenes, but Mary is not baring her breast, and it is therefore closer to a Doctrina image.
