Description:
A woodcut from the 'Chronicarum Liber' or Nuremberg Chronicle written by Hartmann Schebel and printed in Nuremberg by A Koberger in 1493. Bernard is depicted standing holding a crozier with a sudarium attached in his right hand and his left hand raised with the index finger pointing. Unusually, he is shown wearing a mitre. The Clairvaux coat of arms is at his feet. The inscription above the portrait reads: 'Sanctus Bernardus abbas clarevellensis'. The text adjacent to the picture contains a biographical description.
