Description:
A woodcut from the 'Legenda Aurea' in Portuguese dated 1513 decorating the beginning of the chapter devoted to Bernard. Bernard kneels in a landscape, his crozier under his right arm and his hands raised in acknowledging the Virgin and Child appearing in the heavens. The Virgin holds the cross-nimbed Child in her right hand while her left hand is squeezing her breast pointed in the direction of Bernard. Two books lie on the ground. The oldest Bernard image printed in Spain.
