Description:
One of a large number of woodcuts of saints in the 'Hortulus animae' printed in Strasbourg in 1512 by Martin Flach. It was also used in an edition by Thomas Wolff of Basel dated 2 November 1519. Whereas all the other saints are depicted with halos, the one of Bernard is not as the figure of Christ with his arms detached from the Cross in an Amplexus scene is nimbed. Bernard kneels with his hands outstretched to support Christ's body. The arms of Bernard surmounted by a mitre lies on the ground between the two figures. See also EN85.
