Description:
Single print. A late fifteenth-century hand-coloured woodcut from the Upper Rhine has a standing Bernard, nimbed and
bearded. He carries a crozier leaning on his left shoulder. With his left hand he holds a leash which is placed round the
neck of a horned standing demon of the same size as Bernard. Bernard's right hand is raised in blessing, and at the top
the hand of God is also shown blessing. The sheaf of corn and the vine leaves and grapes in the background allude to
the inscription at the top which reads: 'O sant bernhart behuet win und korn' (O, Saint Bernard, protect wine and corn).
