Description:
Single print. A woodcut from the Upper Rhine dated 1460-75 and attached to a Psalter from 1477. An Amplexus scene in a room with a green floor, an open window on the left through which there is a view of a landscape with a tree, and a closed window on the right. A kneeling Bernard in a grey cowl and with a yellow halo has both arms outstrethed to receive the smaller figure of Christ with his hands detached from the T-Cross ( inscribed INRI at the top) and reaching down to Bernard. Christ has long black hair and beard, a chestnut coloured cross-nimbus and streams of blood pouring down his body. Bernard's coat of arms are at the foot of the Cross.
