The work of Israhel van Meckenem (c1440-1503), engraver and goldsmith active at Bocholt on the Lower Rhine. The crowned Virgin and naked Child are enthroned under a baldachin. On the right is the crowned figure of St Catherine receiving a ring from the Child (The Mystical Marriage of Catherine). On the right Bernard kneels with his crozier under his right arm and with hands folded in prayer. The Virgin bares her right breast which she squeezes with her right hand and a jet of milk gioes in the direction of Bernard on whom her eyes are turned. Between them is the inscription 'Monstra te esse matrem'. Below is the monogram I.V.M.
