Description:
A pen and ink drawing in a Missal from the Cistercian abbey of Heilsbronn dated 1440/50. The blood-stained body of Christ has his arms outstretched from a T-cross in an embrace of the kneeling Bernard. The cross is set in the ground supported by a number of rocks and, in what is the only recorded example of the motif, the scene is witnessed by Mary and John. Above an angel is swinging a thurifer.
