Description:
Composition drawing in black chalk heightened with white for the Vision of St Bernard by Fra Bartolommeo (see PA26 & PA28) from 1504-6. The only extant study for the Vision, it emanates greater spiritual intensity than the painting, due in part to Bernard's vivacious gesture. Previous examples of the scene had all placed Bernard on the same level as the Virgin. A small crucifix is on the ground between Mary and Bernard.
